Early December we took advantage of a friend’s invite to stay with them in Wellington. As her children were still at school for a week on the date we wanted to come over, we took the flight across ditch and ending up in Queenstown. We would meet up with her at the end of the week.
As soon as we got out of the airport to say it was breath taking was putting it mildly. Even the self-contained apartment was amazing and the view of the lake was amazing. (I refrain from awesome as everyone uses that now). For some reason this time of year is a shoulder as there is not enough snow for skiing , and it is not the height of the school holidays. We thought it would be cold. We had a week of the average temp was 27 deg C. The ozone layer is thin so we all were tanning or getting burnt.
The food of the New Zealand is fresh and delicious. The best cherries I have ever tasted. The locally made clothes are very well made and they know how to use their wool. We learnt a few words such as jandles instead of thongs, trim instead of skim and tramping instead of bush walking. “Choice bro“as well.
The days were long and sunset was at 9.30pm. Plenty of time to do activities; except bungy jumping for us. I mean, any highpoint let’s put a landing to dangle someone. We did do the Luge which is a type of go kart using gravity to hoon around a track high up on a hill overlooking Queenstown. We did some mildly extreme adventure with a speed boat down the Dart River and paddled back on inflatable canoes. Hard work. The downstream canoeing is one of control and co-ordinating the three of us and getting out of the way of the speed boats coming upstream! It looked so tranquil on the brochures.
Milford Sound is one of those areas of the world you can tick off a bucket list. The boat even manoeuvred under a waterfall for a ceremonially dumping on willing participants. Puzzle World near Wanaka was a lot of fun with optical illusions, a titled room that challenged our sense of balance and a maze with towers and bridges.
Now, the dental moment. On the way to the Dart River speed boat ride we passed a range of mountains where they called one Tooth Peak (not pick).
