Need an Appointment?

This leads us to the other uses of the periapical xray which is record keeping, monitoring and the planning of treatment.
With root canal treatment the length of the tooth has to accurately found once the cleaning files are placed. We need to know the shape of a root before a tooth is removed. An xray is used to monitor the progression of treatment. Sometimes bone graft material is placed when a tooth is removed to encourage bone growth for a future implant placement, generally 3 months later. When implants are placed x-rays help confirm that the angle and depth are correct during the procedure. Then usually six months later (together with other tests) to check the implant is ready to be ‘built’ on. X-rays look for any further loss of bone due to gums problems. This may be needed every six mouths sometimes earlier if close monitoring is required. The aim is to see healing and success of treatment. Unfortunately these xrays are 2D not 3D (glasses do not help). So we cannot see a side on view of objects this is where CT scans help in some situations.
Interpreting the xrays is as important as the xray itself. Xrays are an aid and also a means for patients to understand what is going on. You should know more when you leave SeymourDental than when you came in.
