Missing you all and I have just under two weeks to go before I leave this haven. I went trekking through the mountains and I got lost one day for two hours. I was thinking of all the tips Malcolm Douglas talked about but was exhausted by the time I got home and wondered how I got myself in that.
One of the memorable trips on my Greece holiday was on a trip to another island named “Nissiros”. This small island attracted tourists not only for its beauty but because there was a volcano and another very old church, which originally was a cave and the church was built around it. When we arrived in Nissiros a coached whizzed us up these winding roads, to get to the volcano. Boy did I pray a lot all the way there as the driver was a bit of a maniac and the roads were not for the fainthearted. The volcano was situated on top of this little island and first glance reminded me of movies sets of Mars. The smell was so intense (rotten eggs) that I had to cover my mouth with my scarf but eventually I got used to it. We all trekked into the crater of the volcano and had to dodge the hot air escaping through the holes in the ground. This reminded me of a movie i had seen with Arnold Schwarzenegger “Total Recall” when he had the fantasy of going to Mars.
After the adventure of the volcano we came back into the town and walked over 100 steps up to a small cave that had a church built in honor of the Virgin Mary. I drank in the cobbled stoned roads that were so narrow , if I put my arms out I could practically touch the opposing houses. They were like a fairytale setting and I was in constant awe of all I was taking in. The disadvantage of living on this island was that there were no doctors and if someone was taken ill they would have to wait till the morning to catch the ferry into town about 20 minutes away. This trip has enhanced my longing for the quite country life and I hope one day to retire to the country. For the moment I am grateful to be back safely, to see my family and friends and work colleagues, to have a job that can pay the needs of my family.
Until next time “YIA SOU“, goodbye for now.
