Pain Relief – Part 5 – More Medications / Lesions

June 30, 2025

Let’s explore more lesions and medications for their relief of pain.

Erosion lesions

are where some of the surface layer of the tissue has been lost without exposing the next layer of the body.

Gastric reflux’s acidity erodes hard and soft tissue. That means even the surfaces of teeth are acid eroded. This can cause a loss of the enamel of the teeth to exposure of the dentine causing sensitivity. The enamel has softened, so it wears away.

The bacteria that cause decay, thrive in acid environment, so decay can become rampant. The exposed denture is more prone to decay and decays faster.

pH of Things

pH of things. The lower the pH of a food or drink, the more acidic it is and therefore the more potential to cause damage to your teeth and gums.

The mouth becomes dry and the gums and mucosal surface becomes flaky, bright red and raw. This material floats around and is an irritant. It can cause the person to cough. The gums and cheek become inflamed and even a low sugary diet will super charge the decay causing bacteria.

Tips to protect your teeth

  1. Seek advice from a GP to get the reflux under control.
  2. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  3. Avoid lying down after meals.
  4. Avoid smoking and alcohol.
  5. Chew sugar free gum to get the saliva flowing
  6. Don’t brush your teeth immediately after experiencing reflux.
  7. Use a fluoride mouthwash daily.
  8. Visit your dentist regularly so that any dental issues can be addressed.

The moral of the story is in order to get relief of pain for this condition involves management of the person and just not the teeth and gums.

The medical GP may prescribe medication such as Nexium to control the reflux.

The dentist may prescribe neutrofluoro toothpaste which is high in fluoride. A dry mouth regime involving biotene, dry mouth gel, special saliva stimulating chewing.
