Dance for Abilities is an organisation in Australia that organises and runs social events for the intellectually disabled community. Their aim is that everyone deserves a great night out and our aim is to bring the community together in some of Sydney’s hottest locations to socialise and dance the night away.

It was founded by Jonathan Hopkirk, the younger brother of Rosa who was born with Down Syndrome. Being a part-time DJ and having been involved in organising events, Jonathan often took Rosa along with him for a night out and to help him spin the decks, which she absolutely loved. Many great memories were made on these nights out and Jonathan saw an opportunity to make many more for the wider community. And with this in mind, Dance for Abilities was born.

Social opportunities logistically can be limited for people with intellectual disabilities and funding also presents an issue. Dance for Abilities vision is to host events for people with intellectual disabilities in the same venues that we ‘all’ like to attend with the same frills that we ‘all’ take for granted when socialising. This also allows the interaction between those who get involved offering their services and those that have a disability which helps to build a positive familiarity in an often, segregated society.
