Nearly 28 years ago my life, and my wife’s, changed. We had our first son, James. However, two year’s later, our life changed again. Our suspicions about our son were confirmed with an early development clinic diagnosis of autism. So, the unexpected journey of our family began. Our extended families also came along the ride. Over the years many amazing people have contributed to enriching James’ life in so many ways. My wife Eva has worked tirelessly to navigate and co-ordinate James’ programme and care. We are now thinking of James’ future with sustainable care without us being there.
James’ is often unpredictable, but is always learning. He is non-verbal ….. well sort of as he has some words. However, his communicative intent is strong. He has personality and spunk!
So why do we train and run? It’s not just for the adults with challenges in life. It’s also for the families. Every person has a unique situation that is every changing. No-one has the all the right answers. However, being empathetic and understanding is greatly appreciated.
This year I have had some wonderful training partners.
My brother Mark.
Then Brother Mark said, “hey let’s train on this trail I know”.
Well, the sign says watch out for the snakes in the bush.
At least there was a meadow to be enjoyed.
Now this year’s runners who have given up their time and running legs for Team Miroma.
Jo.
She is a great friend of the family who understands and appreciates James over the many years. She is happy to be in Team Miroma and such a joy to run with her again.
Breaking news
She has run in Team Miroma in the past, and has rejoined the team just over a week from the Run Day. She has been out of the state for some time but she is back for Team Miroma! Well, maybe for other reasons. Good to train with you once again.
So many people have run with Team Miroma and Team Wairoa in the past.
I am so blessed by such people.
