At recent Dental Trade exhibition, there was a lecture given by Prof Ian Meyers OAM.
His lecture was on:
Composites, cements and ceramics: contemporary choices for challenging clinical cases
His talk explored advances in restorative (filling) materials and their application in managing complex cases. He reviewed contemporary options including high-strength core materials, injectable resins, printable composites, enhanced glass hybrids, customized cements, and optimized ceramics. Benefits and limitations of each was discussed, supported by scientific evidence and clinical case examples. He presented insights into material selection and techniques, enabling more predictable, evidence-based treatment decisions tailored to individual patient needs. He explored may concepts beyond cleaning decay and filling the “hole”.
Filling will no longer be passive but active materials to the sustained health of the teeth and mouth, repairing chalky enamel and preventing conditions that cause further decay.
There are new designs and materials to address the dentist curse…. Cracks. These new techniques will reduce the loss of teeth and wearing down the teeth. This will improve chewing and reduce jaw muscle and joint problems.
All important for general & mental health.
There are more minimal invasive materials that can applied directly to prevent the crack traveling further.
There are more filling types and uses than ever before requiring more decision and options to be less invasive and preserving the mouth and its structures.
It also means to even improve the current situation by” turning back the clock”, or even “renovating” as well.
