Cybersecurity and Confidentiality at Seymour Dental

May 11, 2026

Cybersecurity

We recently began our journey (which 99% done!) of upgrading our computers and monitors, xray units, well pretty much everything. It never ends.

The driving force was cybersecurity.

The router was upgraded with new security feature and antivirus and anti … other stuff as well. I am not going to tell – that’s part of the security. There is a non-digital component to it, where a phone call is made and other security checks are done before new software is allowed.

Even a flying saucer! That’s the wi-fi router.

New patient Monitor taking us to places we rather be (Hawaii)
Even in the second surgery, new Monitor taking us to La Turbie

But I digress. Pity. Cyber security has become so important with the ferocity of criminal activity that believes it’s ok to steal, disrupt (often for no reason other than they can do it), steal identities and ruin people’s lives.

Everyone wants to steal from us as we become a commodity for the dark web. It could mean being held to ransom or blackmailed. It’s the wild west! Who do you trust with so much fake news and liars in the millions.

Ransomware can ruin a practice’s life as the criminals encrypted the practice records and data for money. It’s scary, but this is the new reality.

It’s the new pandemic with constant new variants being created. The latest AI. The latest in “fakeness” and lies, but on a whole new level. The cures can’t keep up with it.

Confidentiality

We treat this very seriously. This is part of security. We do not discuss patient details, treatment, medical history or even the existence of other patients, even if they are family members or friends.

The reason, we not supposed to. Also, we are not aware of what’s going on in other people’s lives. An example, husband and wife has separated and are apart. One of them may tracking their whereabouts, and it could get ugly. The innocent question may be when was the person last in.

We need to assume the worst all time, but the information is confidential regardless.

The other innocent question, “I referred my friend here … did they come? “

Sorry we can’t you tell its confidential, but thanks for referring people here.

It’s to protect everyone and to ensure trust, which is becoming a difficult commodity to have in the hostile world we live in, both real and digital (trying to be real for often the wrong reasons).

It’s always nice to go outside and experience the sunshine. I’m going to do it right now! Oh, a notification the practice computer has been backed up securely to the cloud. I am going to look at one of them now.
