Item Number for Veneer (was 583) is now also called Bonded Facing Indirect (now 556). The tooth-coloured material is made in a lab and is then bonded to cover the surface of the tooth. This is usually done to mask a discoloured or misshaped tooth.

Care you may need to be in the health fund for 12 months. Some levels of cover may not cover this item as it is considered a cosmetic item.

Usually, the tooth needs to be prepared, otherwise the veneer placed on the tooth will look more forward and unnatural, (bit like horse teeth). 

The reduction of the tooth surface is a permanent situation.

Overtime with the use of one’s mouth, wear does occur. The edge of the veneers is stronger than teeth. However, the rest of the mouth may wear causing the veneer to bear the brunt of the bite. 

So, this means, it’s not a set and forget.

The veneers may pop off or crack. There needs to be continual assessment of the bite, with adjustment or in some cases a protective occlusal splint may be needed.
