The wheelchair, the walker and the cane

It’s important that as many patient have access to dental care. We often have patients who come in wheelchairs or with walkers to visit us for dental treatment. As we are on the ground floor  we only have one small step for people to enter the practice. An easy way is to wheel the chair in backwards. Going out the same approach of going out backwards seems to work well. Sometimes, we can carry out the treatment without the patient leaving the wheelchair or just sitting on the walker’s seat.

This can make it more difficult carrying out the dental treatment but it is do-able. If the patient has difficulty getting out of the chair then staying in the chair is the best and often safest option. We always try and work with the patient to achieve the most comfortable outcome possible.

If we need to take an x-ray of the whole jaw the OPG x-ray machine can be lowered down to the patient sitting in the wheel chair. This enables the patient again not having to get out of the chair for an x-ray assessment.
