Dental Health Week – How Much Sugar is Hidden in Your Trolley? Part 3 – Understanding Sugar

September 14, 2020

Remember foods the claim to have no “added sugar” often have a higher level of sugar from natural sources, but these sugars can still cause tooth decay

ADA Understanding Sugar fact sheet

Gum anyone?

Chewing sugar-free gum may not be an obvious habit that can benefit your teeth. But research has shown that chewing sugar-free gum for 20 minutes after eating can stimulate your mouth to produce more saliva, which helps neutralise decay – causing acid attacks.

Key sugar messages

Limit sugar Consume no more than 6 teaspoons (24 grams) of free sugar per day.
Low sugar foods Choose foods (with less than 10 grams of sugar per 100 grams).
Hidden sugars Look out for hidden sugars when purchasing foods and drinks.
