Pain Relief – Part 1

June 2, 2025

Pain relief is not always about popping pills.

Pills are very helpful; and the way they work, very complex.

Pain relief medication mechanisms - explained later. (Australian Society of Endodontics lecture 3rd March 2025)

However, in some situations, a painkiller won’t even work.

Here are some examples-

Adjust the bite

A high spot on a filling can cause sensitivity to hot, cold and biting. The jaw muscles find it annoying and will grind at it till its worn, especially at night. Basically, it’s self-inflicted trauma, and once adjusted the sensitivity should subside unless there are other issues.

The bite often needs to be adjusted when teeth become loose with due to loss bone from gum disease. This can cause pain on biting until the bite is adjusted.

If the teeth have moved due to excessive grinding or bruxism of the teeth. This leads to sensitivity and mobility of the teeth. Adjustment is necessary for treatment.

In starting a root canal treatment, inflammation may occur at the end of the root canal meeting the bone. The inflammation pushes the tooth out of its socket, and into the opposing teeth. A vicious cycle occurs, and the best option is and adjustment to the bite.

Muscle Pain – Trismus

Trismus with pain on trying to open

The closing jaw muscles are overworked by excessive grinding of the teeth, causing them to spasm. These muscles are stronger than the opening jaw muscles, so this makes it difficult to open the jaw. This is called trismus. The muscle needs to be rested and be warmed up, to provide a healing blood flow.

Pain Killers

Are best taken by the clock and not by pain. This maintains optimal levels of the pain killers in the blood.

Generally, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Nurofen, treat the site of the injury.

Whereas Panadol, acts in the brain, to raise the pain threshold.
