In 2012 the first blog about these runs began. However, Dr Anthony Seymour has run, with friends, to raise money for his son’s school Wairoa, for over 4 previous years, form 2008. Anthony’s son, James, has autism. He has been at the school since 2007.
In past years we have run the Harbour Bridge run (9km), the Bay Run (7km).
This year Crystal will be running the Cook River Run (10km) on 24th June.
Anthony will join her and husband Dave on the Bay Run (5/8/2012).
And for the first time, we will run the Harbour Bridge 16/9/2012) run as well, ALL IN ONE YEAR!
Wairoa is a NSW Department of Education and Training school providing specialist educational services for students with moderate and severe intellectual disabilities.
The school offers placement for students between 4 and 18 years from the eastern and inner west suburbs of Sydney.
Wairoa School provides an individualised educational setting utilising a multi-disciplinary team approach involving expertise provided by trained teachers, aides, therapists, counsellors, consultants and other specialised staff, each one committed to meeting the individual needs of each student within a challenging and caring learning environment.
It is the aim of this school to provide an educational environment which is secure, stimulating, challenging, safe and happy. The program of education offered by the school is one which is balanced towards the fulfilment of potential, preparing students for integration into community life through the development of life skills.

Team Wairoa becomes Team Miroma – Fund Raiser
2015 was an amazing year for Team Wairoa. We raised just over $3,700 for James’ school Wairoa. James has now completed high school and received the HSC. Well done. He is now a young adult of 18 years. He still needs care and support as he now moves into his next step in life. He has Autism, with hardly any speech. This has been daunting as there are many providers and a greater flexibility as to what can be done for James. The National Disability Scheme is still in its infancy and as it rolls out, many past organisations are now merged or no longer exist. This can be very confusing and frustrating at times. We are also looking to get respite care as James can be up in the middle of the night, leading to some very tired and emotionally wrecked parents!
We have found a provider for James called Miroma which is a branch of Inala.
Team Wairoa is now Team Miroma.
James’ dad, Anthony (the man from Seymour Dental) & James’ friends – Kim, Joy & Roni, will do the 9km Blackmore’s Harbour Bridge Run on Sunday 18/9/2016 with a 9am start.
Dr Kim Nguyen joined the team last year. It was also Kim’s first year of working at Seymour Dental. I was humbled that she ran with us and very appreciative of her efforts both on the run and at work.
Joy will be running with us for the first time. Joy is dental student/nurse and only has been with us a year. She has never done a 9km run before, but a 9km walk. Joy, it’s the same, you only need to lift your legs a bit more, and you’ll finish quicker! (If only it was that easy!) Thank you for joining us off your own initiative. We will get you over line!
Established in 1958, Inala has a proud history of supporting individuals living with disability to reach their full potential through flexible accommodation, day services and community support.
Inala’s Eastern Suburbs service – Miroma – offers an innovative “integrated options” model of service delivery. Miroma’s three coordinated centres provide the opportunity to explore different aspects of personal development, artistic skills, independence and pre-vocational skills at each centre and within the community.
We are grateful for the support from our family and friends. Even listening to our concerns means we are not alone. We know that there are people who care and want to make changes for the better. We really appreciate all the people and carers who have helped us in the life of James. They are like gold!
Again, thanks for your support. We really appreciate it!
