Causes of changes to your bite – It’s more than you think! Part 3

August 10, 2026

Loss of teeth and what can happen to bite.

In the body if you don’t use you lose it. So, if the tooth is lost, the bone that surrounds the tooth will start to removed by the body, this is called resorption. It’s not needed so away it goes. Interesting, if the tooth is lost to gum problems that affect this “tooth” bone, the bone loss is faster and greater, than a tooth removed for other reasons such as decay.

A principle of tooth loss, the surrounding “fall” into the space. The teeth on either side of the space will tip into. A tooth above the space will move down if it does not meet another tooth on the way down. Even a lower tooth can move up into a space on the upper jaw.

See even a tooth can defy gravity!

Teeth can rotate as they move into the space. The tooth next to the moving tooth does not have a tooth next to it stop it moving, so it also moves or rotates or tip.

Occasionally, with teeth moving closer to the opposing jaw, the tooth causes jaw movements, especially forwards and backwards, to get locked up, affecting jaw joints. The movement of the joint becomes dysfunctional as it tries to do negotiate, this anatomical speed bump. Often biting the tongue and cheek, very tasty, leading to muscle spasms, bruising, ulcers and clicking jaw joints.

What a mess that continues for the rest of your life.

But there’s more. The mess of teeth are now in positions that become difficult to clean and use. Decay, gum issues and jaw joint dysfunction increase greatly.

Not happy teeth, not happy life!!!

Front tooth into “hole”; wisdom tooth rotated into cheek, lower down as no lower tooth
OPG X-ray with both upper last teeth hanging down with 2 upper teeth needing removal

This Xray also shows that the lower wisdom did not form or exist.

This is called congenitally absent teeth.

In some situations, the new tooth congenitally absent under a baby tooth.

This leads to a retained baby tooth.

Right side: normal bite with premolar tooth; Left side: lower baby tooth, not a good bite.

The problem is the baby tooth is smaller and shorter than the new tooth, especially in the front teeth. However, the back baby teeth are wider and shorter than the new teeth (premolars) and that means the opposing does not “mesh” properly, and the adjacent teeth do not meet properly.

Another mess and this may require orthodontics.
