Last year, I said: “We come from many different backgrounds and live on an amazing unique continent and its people. We should celebrate and be thankful”.
Remember “we’re all in this together!”
Well this Australia Day we will appreciate the men and women who confronted the greatest area of natural disaster that this country has ever seen, head on, the Bush Fires.
Bush fires are part of the Australian psyche as Dorothea Mackeller wrote in her famous poem
“I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.”
and
“Core of my heart, my country!
Land of the rainbow gold,
For flood and fire and famine
She pays us back threefold.”
This was evident on how the whole community of all backgrounds and religions have banded together, without fear or favour. Some have lost their live protecting others. Even the world is united in their pouring of aid to this country.
We are a young country of immigrants but with long history and understanding of the Land through our original inhabitants. We have a lot to learn from each other and may it long continue.
We are ALL Australians!
