Dentist At Large – Melbourne – Part 1

February 27, 2023

It has been nearly three years since my family got on a plane to get away for a break. The last time was on a flight to the Gold Coast at the beginning of Covid. The borders were not closed then, however fewer people were flying, so the airline decided to cancel our flight and put us on an earlier flight. One and a half days later, the restaurants were closed and the border into Queensland was soon closing. So in the hire car we drove back home to Sydney virtually non-stop!

Fast forward to now. We decided to go to Melbourne for a break and catch up with friends. Again, our evening flight was cancelled but this time it wasn’t an earlier flight but on an earlier plane! A twin propeller plane to Canberra then a smaller jet plane to Melbourne. We left later and doubled our travelling time. We nearly got to out hotel room the next day! Covid! Less staff and less reliable planes due to – you guessed it – less staff. Fun!

However, the real reason we went to Melbourne was for my son competing in an Oceania Pokémon card game tournament at the Melbourne Convention Centre. As he was unable to pick up his registration bag the night before, due to our late flight, we had to go early the next morning before the tournament started. I never thought I would see dawn in Melbourne!

Anyway, we navigated the brilliant tram system of Melbourne to arrive at the amazing Convention and Exhibition Centre complex, next the Yarra River. (It is also conveniently located next to the Crown Casino, if you are into that sort of thing).

There were competitors from many countries competing for thousands of dollars in prizes over three days. Good luck son!

Just to make to make it more interesting it was a 38°C day. It was that early that when I went back the hotel, breakfast was still on. Thank fully there was an indoor swimming pool awaiting me as well.

We are so grateful to Joy, (a past dentist and student dental nurse) and her husband for picking us up from the airport, after patiently waiting for plane to show up.

We explored the city and had dinner at a suggested Italian restaurant. Yum.  Tomorrow our amazing hosts are kindly takes us to more sights of Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula with a dental twist.

This included the Bathing Boxes at Brighton Beach.

This was one tired dentist at the end of the day. From midnight to dawn and midnight again.
