Happy New Year – Highlights of 2023 – Part 4 – October – December

February 3, 2025

October

Mokoli’i island in the foreground with the mountains in the background, Hawaii

We are now on the island of Oahu and, after figuring how to drive a Dodge on the wrong side of the road, with a GPS device falling of the dashboard, we made it to Kualoa Ranch. This was made famous for where Jurassic Park was filmed. It’s an expansive private ranch next to the national park and extends to the coast. Our visit today was to take a long boat trip across the Moli’I Hawaiian Fishpond, then to a catamaran trip into the coastal bay and out into the ocean.

Dentist at Large – Hawaii – Land, Sea & Culture – Part 1

Then, after the Sea, we visited culture, the Polynesian Cultural Centre, about 30 minutes up the east coast of Oahu north of Kahlua Ranch.

The centre featured cultures from:

  • Hawaii
  • Aotearoa (New Zealand)
  • Fiji
  • Samoa
  • Tahiti
  • Tonga
  • Rapa Nui (Easter Island)
Samoan Fire performances
Only a dentist can subdue a Raptor in his bare hands!

The O’hau island road trip begins into the pre-historic past coming alive in the future (a bit of poetic licence) – Ok, the fake future that is Jurassic Park.

Jurassic Park, at Kualoa Ranch, first stop in the Dodge on the road trip around the island. Taken around on a 4-wheel raptor (like a quad bike/dune buggy) to meet a two-legged raptor. Going up into the hills, bush, creeks, dirt tracks, dodging dinosaurs, bouncing all over the place.

Onwards with the road trip to the north shore of Oahu after encountering dinosaurs we are on way to meet another creature that is ancient, but this time they still exist and are not the stuff of Hollywood. Actually, they have appeared in movies.

Anyway, we passed the famous but busy surf beaches of Pipeline and Waimea Bay; but no big surf as it’s summer. We finally reached Turtle Bay Beach with parking and the large Sea Turtles!

At Diamond Head Peak at Dawn worth the lack of sleep

Sleep in? You’re kidding! Up at 5am for a steep walk, climb ladders, to get to the highest peak edge of a dormant volcanic crater called Diamond Head, for dawn at 6am.

Dentist at Large – Pokémon World Championship

The 2024 Pokémon World Championships is the capstone event of the 2024 Championship Series season, and players from all around the world will battle for the title of World Champion. Main events at the Pokémon World Championships are by invitation only.

2024 Pokémon World Championships in Honolulu - Robbie Trainer Master

It’s on for young and old for the trainers, the spectators and for Hawaii. Let’s battle especially the Pokémon card game players of the master’s category.

Honolulu Convention Centre comes alive with Pikachu in space!
So many trainers competing in the Day 1 Swiss round (this is half the room of competitors).

Robbie began playing his first match by facing a competitor from Korea, He also made a statement with his Pokémon World Championship 2024 Hawaiian shirt.

The final match was between a competitor from Chile and one from Japan. The Chilean competitor had a bit of a fan club chanting cheer “Chile, Chile, Chile”! It felt like I was at a World Cup soccer game. Anyway, as it turned out the Chilean won. This is the second South American player to win the world championship.

December

We also had a rest day on the second day of the competition and decided to rest up and enjoy Waikiki beach. Then we stop resting and did some shopping.

View from our room. We finally got to enjoy (cheated a bit - zoomed between hotels)

We had a great time in Hawaii and it was amazing special with the surprise of the Pokémon drone shows, fireworks, amazing countryside and holiday destinations such as Kura Ranch Polynesian Centre swimming with the turtles and climbing diamond head.

We had some amazing food at the laulau and real Hawaiian food of a different taste.

We learnt about a what happened at Pearl Harbour and hopefully will never ever see another Pearl Harbour attack again ever in history, but you never know as the world is never ever predictable.

How much for a filling? Wrong question – Part 1: Why have I the need for a filling?

The why answer helps us to how we can best help you for the future.

The saying “do no harm”, not only applies to the treating dental surgeon but also to the patient. Achieving both makes for a lasting health outcome.

Let’s start with a case that even surprised me with the extent of the problem that needed to be solved.

Darkish staining in tooth next to filling. Dark decay-mid tooth & end of crack.

The decay at the end of the crack, was much more extensive and deeper. This was a complete surprise, at of all proportion to the shadow on the Xray.

How much for a filling? Wrong question – Part 2: Assessment

A simple act of prevention, cleaning teeth correctly with a toothbrush

For decay to occur, you need three things:

  1. The right sort of bacteria that love sugar and an acid environment.
  2. The wrong diet that feeds these bacteria.
  3. A susceptible tooth that has a weakened surface due to a dry mouth, gastric reflux, and/or difficult to clean anatomy (grooves) or arrangement of teeth.

If any of these items are not present then the risk of decay is greatly reduced, and therefore preventable!
