Happy New Year – Highlights of 2025 – Part 3 – July to September

January 26, 2026

July

We continue the series on the complex subject of pain relief, with

Pain Relief – Part 6 – More, more Lesions / Medications – Fungal

This is an interesting lesion as it comes in under different names such as denture sore mouth, angular cheilitis, furry tongue and thrush. It can be quite insidious and difficult to diagnose at first. The mouth contains various organisms, including many types of bacteria, parasites, viruses, and many types of fungi and yeast. They are all competing with each other for survival. Most of the time the body tolerates these “freeloaders” as sometimes there are benefits to the body. However, the terms and conditions of them not to behave badly are as follows:

Human

  • Immune system not compromised
  • Not taking medication that upsets the balance
  • Not having a dry mouth – due to medications, smoking, sinusitis, sleep apnoea
  • Providing an environment that favours one organism over another
  • Diet (or lack of it)
  • Hygiene (or lack of it)

Organisms

Any opportunity to thrive, out compete the other orgasms and they don’t care about the host. Sorry no love lost here. This brings us to Fungal infections.

Candida albicans – White (albino) coating on tongue

Pain Relief – Part 7 – More, more Lesions / Medications – Viral

Relief of viral pain is generally preventative, and early detection and treatment and what not do!

Some examples of viral infections include Herpes Virus infection (Herpes Simples Type 1), Human Papilloma Virus infection, Coxsackie Virus infection, Mumps, Measles (rubeola), and Rubella, and even AIDS.

However, the most common viral infection in the mouth is with the Herpes Simplex Type 1. It is estimated that 97% of people have the Herpes Type 1 virus. (Type 2 Herpes virus is found in the genitals).

The primary or first infection of Herpes Simplex affects the whole mouth causing multiple ulcers and a highly inflamed mouth. It is raw, red and sore. It can last 1-3 weeks.

Antibiotics will not work for viruses!

Pain Relief – Part 8 – More, more Lesions / Medications – Autoimmune, Cancer

This category of pain relief is for these lesions is a problematic one…

in their early stages there is no pain!

Also, when it’s obvious what the lesion is it’s too late.

There are lesions that appear to not cause immediate discomfort or pain. You may think that’s not so bad. The problem is when it’s obvious there is an issue, it’s too late. Often a dentist will notice changes in the mouth, usually a colour change or an ulcer that does not heal. Basically, it means there is a chronic irritation that the body is responding to. This causes changes in the structure or processes of some cells to change.

Oral cancer is primarily associated with smoking but studies have revealed that 25% of those diagnosed have NEVER SMOKED!

Early Detection
At Seymour Dental we encourage regular visits to not only to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy but the whole of the mouth and lips are checked as well. This enables the dentist to look for the early signs of oral cancer.

Dentistry does not operate in a vacuum – Mind, Body, Mouth, it’s all connected – Blog Series – Part 1

Mind Body Mouth, it's all connected

Dental Health Week (DHW) is the Australian Dental Association’s (ADA) major annual oral health campaign that takes place in August. In 2023 we are looking at the importance of care your mouth AND yourself.

Seymour Dental’s motto is: We are dedicated to providing personal care to assist you in achieving excellent health outcomes for life!

As a profession we focus on the mouth and whole-body connection. There are links between diseases in the mouth and diseases in the body. Bacteria in the mouth can travel to different sites of the body and inflammation in the mouth can increase the body’s overall inflammation.

In light of these and other findings, the campaign will explore six connections:

Mind, Body, Mouth, it’s all connected – Blog Series – Part 2 starts off spring.

This week’s part 2 – the focus will be on Lungs, Inflammatory Bowels, and Pregnancy.

Lungs

Periodontitis and respiratory diseases share common risk factors including smoking, obesity and diabetes. There is early evidence supporting the association between periodontitis and some common respiratory diseases – chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and COVID-19.

More Team Miroma Training – Checking out the new 10km Course

So, Saturday afternoon I tested out the new course in mildly cool but sunny winter’s day.

Team Miroma Training – Why are we training and running 2025

Nearly 28 years ago my life, and my wife’s, changed. We had our first son, James. However, two years later, our life changed again. Our suspicions about our son were confirmed with an early development clinic diagnosis of autism. So, the unexpected journey of our family began. Our extended families also came along the ride. Over the years many amazing people have contributed to enriching James’ life in so many ways. My wife Eva has worked tirelessly to navigate and co-ordinate James’ programme and care. We are now thinking of James’ future with sustainable care without us being there.
